He had a good job, a loving relationship and a new sense of freedom. But at the age of 23, he was diagnosed with HIV and told his CD4 count was perilously low. This news came as a shock: Not only did he work in HIV prevention, but he always played it safe with his then-boyfriend, who was positive. Henry talks to us about living with HIV for the past 15 years; the stigma around being Filipino, gay and positive; and letting go of the fear of dying early.

She was rushed to the hospital, where she was also diagnosed with HIV. Her CD4 count was zero. While the doctors basically sent her home to die, Rachelle recovered with the help of medicine, support and her faith. A year later, this newly married church leader and recovering addict talks with us about cheating death, why ignorance around HIV is killing us and why she started her own group to build women's self-esteem.

Maybe I'm zip-lining through the rain forest of Costa Rica, or I'm gorging myself at the dessert buffet. The water slide high above the 3,000-passenger ship will always make me smile.

For the 200 people in our group (and even Dab the AIDS Bear), it was something more than a vacation. It included education seminars, AIDS treatment updates from activist Nelson Vergel, author of the new book "Testosterone: A Man's Guide", live game shows just for our group, and shore excursions that tested our spirit of adventure.

You Are Not Alone: A Video Blog by Justin B. Terry-Smith

Today I decided to make a "You Are Not Alone" video because of the many suicides that are happening in the LGBTQ Youth. Many of these beautiful young people are committing suicide because of bullying in school.

I can empathize with this. In middle school I tried to commit suicide because of pressures at school. I was called the "F word" a lot. I didn't want to tell anyone because I didn't know what would happen to me. I was so scared to go to school sometimes I faked sick just not to go. In middle school I was attacked several times. I was pushed into lockers, punched, slapped, stabbed with a pencil, and someone actually threw a coin at my head at full force that actually made an indentation in my head. I lashed out at my parents at that time and I went from being an A/B student to a C average student. I knew I was different and the fact that people called me names because of my sexuality stayed with me for a long time.

In Praise of HIV-Negative Gay Men: A Video Blog Entry by Mark S. King

Sometimes it seems there is a silent, wary truce between those of us who are positive and our friends who remain negative. We won't make them feel guilty about being negative if they don't blame us for being positive.

But there are other problematic differences. HIV-negative gay men hear a lot about what they should be doing (or not doing), and not enough about what they are doing well. Meanwhile, those of us living with HIV have been provided services, placed in positions of leadership and exalted in sometimes strange ways. We've certainly needed every bit of support we could get.

A couple of weeks ago on August 11th Alexander made a statement at a Forum that he will push for HIV testing at the DMV [Department of Motor Vehicles].
I wondered why someone would want a testing center at every DMV in D.C. Then he made the most outrageous statement I've ever heard come from a candidate of any election.
The Gay Pride PSA That Never Aired

"Gay Pride" is easily confused by our culture with lesser values -- having the perfect body, drink specials, and the almighty dance floor. It must be just as confusing for younger gay men today to find "the pride inside" as it was for me a generation ago. Anyway, that was on my mind when I created this video, a send-up of earnest public service announcements and a swipe at nightclub culture. Here's hoping your quest for real pride doesn't bear the cost of my own misspent youth.

I had to say goodbye to my doctor recently. I was moving out of state, and Dr. David Morris of Pride Medical Group in Atlanta had been nothing but a patient, supportive teacher to me. Over the years he's seen me through Hepatitis C, a few crystal meth drug relapses and three boyfriends. I love him and what he's done for me, and I hated the prospect of finding a replacement in Florida.

Fortunately, Dr. Morris agreed to give me some tips to make the process easier, and in this video episode you'll see me take his advice. From medical records to being honest about my history, you can watch me use his advice during my very first appointment with Dr. Dominic Riganotti in Ft Lauderdale.

What It Feels Like for a Mom: A Video Blog by Mark S. King

This Mother's Day, my mother Anne King, 83, will be in Michigan spending the holiday with her own mother, who is turning 104 years old. My grandmother still lives alone, cooks her own meals and will give you an earful if you have the time. Please God, bless me with one tiny scrap of the health genes you have granted these amazing women.

The healing balm of a caring mother is a precious resource, and I'm lucky that neither being gay nor having HIV has deterred Mom from loving and encouraging me. In the 1980's especially, when AIDS was more mysterious and feared, several friends of mine lost their family when they gained a virus. Although I've lived far from home since graduating high school, Mom's voice on the phone transports me right back to her. She knows just when the motherly purr of "there, there ..." is required.

There are a lot of things we as HIV positive people have to look out for. But one of our main enemies is stress. You can take all the medication you want, eat all the good food that nourishes your body, and have all the protected sex anyone can have, but when you're stressed out all of it goes out the window.

I was so stressed this year that my body started to feel it. Sciatica was one way my body was showing stress. But after the Acupuncturist I feel great. I've seen her twice now and my body and my mind are feeling a lot better.

In this episode of my video blog, I take you with me while I mull over some of my own outdated thinking about the "AIDS crisis." I also chat with Rep. Barney Frank (arguably the most powerful gay man in America) about gay men living in a post-crisis world.

White, gay men such as myself aren't living in a state of crisis anymore. We're healthy (those of us with health care most especially), we've dialed the AIDS drama way down, and we're more likely to support a gay marriage amendment than someone in the AIDS Walk. Yes, I'm generalizing, but if we don't accept this reality we can't effectively relate to a large portion of the HIV prevention audience.

After the glory days of the 80s, my party quickly came to a halt when the reality of AIDS hit my friends in New York City.

The alarm sounded in my own life when I went for a routine blood test, in connection with getting a marriage license, and asked the doctor to test my blood for the AIDS virus while he was at it.

In 2006, on Memorial Day weekend, I found out that I was HIV positive. I didn't think I'd ever be loved or love someone else at all. I also felt bad because I couldn't have children and my parents would be so disappointed in me. Being in a relationship was the furthest thing from my mind.

When I started to date I told the men I was interested in that I was HIV positive. I wanted to clear the air first and didn't want it hanging over my head that I had the chance to tell them and I didn't. Then at a fundraiser I met the one: my husband, Dr. Philip B. Terry-Smith.

People who take certain HIV medications often get high cholesterol as a side effect of the drugs. Recently my doctor told me that I have high cholesterol. But is it a result of my drug regimen? I had been taking Reyataz, Norvir and Truvada, all of which have high cholesterol as a possible adverse effect. It could be my genes or my lifestyle -- or even a combination. I may never really know. But since high cholesterol increases your risk of having a heart attack or stroke, it's time for me to make some changes.

At the beginning of June I volunteered for THRIVE! -- a one-day educational and empowerment workshop in Atlanta for people living with HIV. I love doing this workshop and think that it is a valuable guide for people on living a long life with HIV.

I started this workshop a couple of years ago. It was based on research in 1987 by Dr. George Solomon and Dr. Lydia Temoshok on how the mind and emotions impact the immune system. The purpose of their study was to understand how "long-term survivors" of HIV are different from people who follow the expected course of HIV disease. Through their research they were able to identify eight characteristics among long-term survivors of HIV.
